Worship of goddesses in Quang Ngai

The central province of Quang Ngai is currently home to hundreds of temples and shrines dedicated to goddesses with worshipping activities taking place year-round.  

As mentioned in the publication “Worshipping goddesses in Vietnam”, there are 75 goddesses worshipped across the country, and most of whom are currently worshipped in Quang Ngai, including goddesses of Cuu Huyen Thien Nu,  Thien Y A Na, and Linh Son Mother Goddess, etc.

Well-known places worshipping goddesses in the province include Truong Ba Shrine in Tra Bong district’s Tra Xuan Commune, Thien Y A Na Goddess Temple in Ly Son District, Goddess Shrine in Nghia Phu Commune of Quang Ngai provincial City, Ky Tan Goddess in Duc Loi Commune of Mo Duc District, temples of Thien Y and Thuy Long near Sa Huynh Seaport in Duc Pho provincial City, etc.

There is also a distinctive goddess worshipped in Quang Ngai. According to both legend and written records, the goddess named Pham Tien Dieu or Roi Goddess was born in 1629 in the province’s Ly Son Island. She was honored for her effort and sacrifice in protecting Ly Son islanders against Tau O attackers in 1645, and later worshipped and regarded as the village goddess of An Vinh in Ly Son Island.
