Over the past years, the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS)’s chapter in Ninh Thuan province has proactively collaborated the local authorities in enhancing local Buddhists’ knowledge and responsibility in environmental protection.
Responding to the coordination program between the Central Fatherland Front Committee, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and religious organizations on environmental protection and climate change response in the period 2015 - 2020, the VBS Executive Committee in Ninh Thuan has launched practical programs for the communication work, such as making of banners, posters and slogans on environmental topics, integration of the contents of environmental protection to Buddhist education gatherings or meetings and summer retreats for children of Buddhist families, helping monks, nuns, and lay Buddhists to understand and implement the laws on environmental protection, enhance knowledge of environmental protection, and eliminate behaviors that cause environmental pollution.
The VBS executive committee has also encouraged monks, nuns and lay Buddhists to protect the environment by doing practical activities such as using bags made of environmentally friendly materials, putting waste in proper places, economically using water sources, planting trees, not using chemical drugs in cultivation, not using banned substances in animal husbandry, cleaning residential areas, etc.
Heads of Buddhist worshipping places have also been asked to create green, clean, and beautiful places of Buddhist worship and regularly remind local Buddhists of reducing the burning of incense and votive papers.
