Strengthening Covid-19 prevention, fire explosion work during summer retreat for Khmer Buddhists

07/13/2021

The association for solidarity of patriotic Buddhist monks in Soc Trang province on July 8 sent a dispatch to abbots and the management boards of Khmer pagodas in the province asking Khmer monks and followers to actively join in Covid-19 fire explosion and prevention work during summer retreat.

According to the tradition of Khmer monks and people, on the day of Boramey and Asath (this year take places on July 24), local Khmer pagodas will hold  Banh Chol Preh Vessa (summer retreat opening) ceremony. This is one of the important rituals for monks and Khmer people. On this occasion, Khmer people often light candles at pagodas during three months of the summer retreat.

Relating the Covid-19 prevention work, the association asked Khmer pagodas in the province to suspend all religious practices gathering large numbers of people, strictly implement the epidemic prevention and control measures as regulated by the Ministry of Health and local authorities, including facemasks, hand washing, and implementation of 5K.

In addition, the association also urged Khmer monks and people to ask their relatives currently living, working or studying in epidemic-affected provinces and cities not to return to the locality during this time. If they come back home, they should have to make health declaration at Medical clinics and centers in the locality.

The Association requested Khmer pagodas not organize candle light procession ceremony in the campus of pagoda and other places in villages (only offering candles at pagodas) in order to well observe Covid-19 preventive measures as well as ensure fire safety and fire protection during the summer retreat.
