The Shakyamuni temple, located in ward 4, Ca Mau city, was built in 1840. It is a religious architectural work and is the earliest Buddhist establishment in Ca Mau province.
By around 1840, Ca Mau province was still a wild land covered with reeds. Local people told a story that during that time, a boy named Tô Quang Xuân went to collect firewood in the forest, when he axed an ancient banyan tree, the boy saw a Buddhist scripture in the tree foot. He then built the temple for practicing the religion and conducting medical treatments to local people around Quan Lo canal.
The temple is a religious architectural work of high artistic values. In 1937, the temple underwent a major restoration but still retained the ancient architecture until today.
