Pang Phoong festival of Khang ethnic group receives national intangible cultural heritage title

Tuan Giao district’s People’s Committee in Dien Bien province held on April 28 a ceremony to receive the state recognition of Pang Phoong (thanksgiving) rite of Khang ethnic group in Rang Dong commune as a national intangible cultural heritage.
According to traditions of Pang Phoong festival of Khang ethnic group’s Lo family, the festival was held every two or three years in November. The shaman of the festival must be from the Lo family lineage’s Lo Khul branch (usually head of the Lo Khul family) and understand the origin and history of the lineage.
The ceremony usually lasts on two days in the house of the head of the Lo family or a chosen household of the Lo family lineage. The event’s worshipping rites aims to pay gratitude to their ancestors and pray for favorable weather, bumper crop, happiness and prosperity.
During the festival, Lo Khul family branch and local people in the village also take part in art performances and activities.
The Pang Phoong festival (Thanksgiving) of the Khang ethnic group in Rang Dong commune of Dien Bien province’s Tuan Giao district was classified as the national intangible cultural heritages in late 2020.
