Pagodas in Soc Trang open Khmer language classes for children

During the summer 2018, over 80 out of 92 Khmer pagodas in Soc Trang province opened free classes of Khmer language for local pupils.

According to Vice Principal of the Thanh Phu 3 primary school Lê Thành Thái, over 70 pupils grade from 1 to 3 have attended free Khmer language classes held by Prek On Dok Khmer pagoda located in My Xuyen district’s Thanh Phu commune. For recent years, not only have Khmer pupils but also Kinh and Chinese pupils attended classes on Khmer language. The temple has borrowed three classrooms of the school for improving the language teaching.

Duong Thị Diễm My, a pupil attending a class in Prek On Dok pagoda said, “I have come here to learn Khmer language for three summer vacation. I can meet, play and learn writing and reading Khmer language when coming here. Now I can read and write my mother language.

Senior Venerable Deputy Head Prek On Dok pagoda Lam Chanh Som said that besides Khmer language learning, Khmer monks often educate children in ethical values, lifestyles and fine traditions.
