Khmer pagoda in Soc Trang inaugurates new sala

Serey Kandal Pagoda located in Soc Trang province’s Vinh Chau district formally inaugurated its new sala (Khmer word for gathering place) at a ceremony held on March 17.

Attending the ceremony included Most Venerable Chairman of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha Executive Committee in the province Tăng Nô, Vice Chairman of the provincial Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee Mai Thanh Tùng, representatives of concerning provincial departments and Vinh Chau district authorities, and a large number of Khmer Buddhist followers.

As reported, the construction of the pagoda’s gathering place was started in 2009 with a total cost of over seven billion VND which was donated by local and oversea Khmer Buddhist followers.

The sala boldly featured the architecture of the Khmer Theravada Buddhist culture and is decorated with carved reliefs depicting the story of Buddha Shakyamuni inside and carvings of dragon figures on the roof.
