Implementation of program promoting religious role in environmental protection reviewed

A meeting to review implementing results of the coordination program promoting roles of religions in environmental protection and climate change adaptation in 2017 was held in Ho Chi Minh City on May 31.

Attending the meeting co-organized by the National Steering Committee of the program and the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee was representatives of the VFF central committee and VFF committees in provincies and cities across the country, and dignitaries of religious organizations who are members of the national steering committee.

As reported the meeting, at concerning central agencies have jointly worked with the ministry of national resources and environment and experts from the Nordic Assistance to Vietnam for survey and assessment of possible engagement of religions in the environmental protection and climate change response. The steering committee has also collaborated with 14 religions in developing pilot models for environmental protection in the country.

Implementing the coordination program, many local religious organizations have also engaged in practical activities for the environmental protection in religious communities and religious concentrated residential areas, including meetings aimed at raising awareness of the issue and working plans of regular activities to develop clean and green urban areas and promote environmental-friendly lifestyles.

The meeting also set out five goals for implementing the coordination program for promoting religious engagement in environmental protection and climate change adaptation in the year 2018. These goals aimed to expand successful models, strengthen collaborations between religions and state agencies and enhance the effective implementation of the program.
