Catholic solidarity committee in My Tho city holds general meeting

The 4th general meeting of the board for solidarity of Catholics in Tien Giang provincial of My Tho was successfully held on March 15.

The event was saw the attendance of Priest Chairman of the provincial committee for solidarity of Vietnamese Catholics Joseph Phạm Thanh Minh, Priest Deputy Head of the city board for solidarity of Catholics  John Batix Nguyễn Văn Sáng and followers of Catholic parishes in the city.

Distinguished guests at the event included Vice Chairman of the provincial Committee for Religious Affairs Trần Văn Khuê and Vice Chairwoman of the city People’s Committee Lê Thị Bé Phượng.

As reviewed at the meeting, My Tho city currently has 10 parishes with more than 12,000 parishioners. Over the past years, Catholic cooperatives of Tien Tien, Nhat Tri and Quang Minh in collaboration with local authorities created jobs for over 1,000 workers.  Catholic followers in the city have proactively engaged in social movements launched by local authorities and contributed over VND 10 billion to charity activities including the provision of free medicines and health checks, building of charity houses and rural bridges, supports to the poor, etc. In addition, the city board also presented scholarships, books, bicycles to pupils and students in the city worth over VND 500 million.

The one-day event also elected 17 members to the Catholic solidarity board in the city for the 2017 – 2022 tenure with Mr. Trần Hồng Lạc from La St. Joseph Lao Cong parish nominated as Head of the board.

On the occasion, local authorities presented certificates of merit to two Catholic groups for their outstanding contributions in social movements in the city.
