Buddhist Sangha in Ben Tre’s Giong Trom district holds 6th congress

The 6th congress of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS)’s Chapter in Ben Tre province’s Giong Trom district was solemnly held on Sept. 8 in Hue Quang pagoda.

Attending the congress included Most Venerable Member of the Central VBS Executive Council cum Chairman of the VBS Executive Committee in Ben Tre province Thích Nhựt Tấn, Most Venerable Member of the Central VBS Executive Council cum Vice Chairman of the VBS Executive Committee in the province Thích Lệ Linh, and large numbers of Buddhist dignitaries and followers in the district.

Vice Chairman of the provincial Committee for Religious Affairs Phạm Ngọc Thành was amongst guests representing local authorities at the Buddhist congress.

The one-day congress nominated 15 members to the new executive board of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in the district for the 6th term (2016-2021) with Venerable Thích Lệ Thiện re-selected as Head of the board.

During the event, the Buddhist executive board in the district presented certificates of merit to one Buddhist group and 14 individuals for their outstanding contributions  in religious and social activities.

results recorded in Buddhist affairs in the fifth tenure (2012-2016), Buddhist followers in the district contributed over VND 8 billion to social and charitable activities during the last five years.

Currently, Giong Trong district is home to about 13,000 Buddhists with 63 monks and nuns, and 30 worshipping places.
