Hoa Son pagoda located in Quang Ngai city’s Nghia Phu commune has preserved 18 ordinations from Nguyen Dynasty.

According to “A Brief History of Buddhism and Pagodas in Quang Ngai province”, Hoa Son pagoda was built in 1793-1800 by the ancestors of the four lineages of Phan, Trần, Trịnh, and Nguyễn in Nghia Phu commune.

The pagoda was restored for several times, and the latest restoration was in 2002 with a total area of nearly 1000 m2.

18 ordinations preserved in the pagoda were issued from Minh Mạng King to Duy Tân King of the Nguyen dynasty to ordain people and places with meritorious service to the country as deities or virtuous tittle, such as Uy Dung Cong than (a mighty mandarin) Lương Quận Công, Doan Nha Cong than (an elegant mandarin) Quảng Quận Công, Duong Vu Cong than (a majestic general) Mai Quý Phủ, etc.

Most of the ordinations were previously preserved by villagers. Due to fierce war and fear of being lost, these families asked the pagoda to preserve the ordinations up to now.

In addition to preserving 18 ordinations, Hoa Son pagoda also has two statues of Thien (Good) and Ac (Evil) deities placed in front of the main worshipping hall. The two statues have nearly 200 years old, weighing about 1.5 tons for each.
