Ang Son Catholic parish in Ninh Binh province’s Hoa Lu district proactively joins hand in environment protection

Ang Son Catholic parish in Ninh Hoa commune, Ninh Binh province’s Hoa Lu district currently has 796 households with 2,611 parishioners (accounting for 35.6 % the commune population) with one parish church and three sub-parish churches.
For the past years, Catholic followers in the parish have proactively participated in patriotic movements launched by local authorities, contributing to the socio-economic development in the locality.
In 2017, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee (VFF) in Ninh Binh province has chosen Ang Son parish to launch a pilot model on environment protection and climate change response.
Implementing this pilot model, the provincial VFF and the parish’s executive board have agreed on the contents of environmental protection such as encouraging people to implement regulations of State and local authorities on environment protection and enhancing supervision of environmental protection in the localiy.
Since then, 100% Catholic households in the parish have signed commitments to implement the movement on environment protection and climate change response. The parish’s executive board has organized practical and youth activities for climate change adaption in the parish in response to the world environment day (June 5).
Typically, Ang Son village has established a waste collection team consisting of five members. On every Monday and Friday, the wastes are gathered in chosen places and transferred to the provincial waste treatment area. On the 27th of every month, the parish’s executive board launches a clean-up activity, assigning young people to collect solid waste. Twice a year, the parish and local authorities organize activities to remove obstacles in the Chanh river, clear the flow, and dredge canals, etc.
In addition, local Catholics in the parish have donated 5,000 m2 of land to build a funeral house in the community, worth 1.8 billion VND. The parish has also successfully persuaded two sub-parishes of Tri So and Dai Ang to respond to the campaign “Lighting up rural roads” and contribute cash and working days to install the light system in village roads with the length of 8.5 km.
