VBS Chapter in Nghe An convenes 3rd congress

The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) Chapter in Nghe An province successfully held its 3rd congress on May 9.

The event taking place at Diec pagoda in Vinh city saw the presence of Most Venerable Thích Thiện Nhơn, President of the VBS’s Central Executive Council; Most Venerable Thích Bảo Nghiêm, Vice Presidents of the VBS’s Central Executive Council; Most Venerable Thích Thanh Nhiễu, Standing Vice President of the VBS’s Central Executive Council cum Chairman of the VBS Chapter in Nghe An; Senior Venerable Thích Thọ Lạc, Vice Chairman of the provincial VBS Chapter, Nun Thích Nữ Diệu Nhẫn, Vice Chairwoman of the provincial VBS Chapter, and 200 Buddhist delegates.

Distinguished guests at the event included Deputy Secretary of Nghe An provincial Party’s Committee Nguyễn Văn Thông, Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Nguyễn Đức Chung, and Director of Buddhist Affairs Department under the Government Committee for Religious Affairs Lê Minh Khánh and representatives from other religions.

The congress elected a 28-member executive committee of the VBS chapter in Nghe An for the 2022-2027 term with Most Venerable Thích Thanh Nhiễu re-elected as Chairman of the VBS executive committee in the province.

New provincial VBS executive committee for 2022-2027 period makes its debut at the event

As reported at the event, Nghe An province currently has 109 monks and nuns with 65 Buddhist worshiping establishments. During the 2017 - 2022 tenure, monks, nuns and lay Buddhists in Nghe An province have spent nearly 100 billion VND on social charities supporting disadvantaged people.

At the event, the Central VBS presented certificates of merit to 7 Buddhist groups and 23 individuals for their contributions to the VBS development . Nghe An provincial People’s Committee also awarded certificates of commendation to three Buddhist groups and three individuals for their contributions to social cohesion and national solidarity, and two Buddhist collectives and two individuals for their contributions in Covid-19 prevention work.

On the occasion, the new VBS executive committee in Nghe An presented five charity houses worth 250 million VND to the provincial Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee.
