Catholic community in Ca Mau contributes 20 billion VND for social charities

According to the Committee for Solidarity of Catholics in Ca Mau province, Catholicism in the locality has currently 24 sub-parishes, over 30,000 parishioners, 35 priests, 11 congregations, 71 nuns and 18 practicing places.

With the motto “Living the gospel within the heart of the nation”, Catholic dignitaries and lay followers in Ca Mau province have made many practical contributions in social charities, with the total value of over 20 billion VND.

Following to the pastoral theme of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Vietnam "Promoting participation in Catholic Church", the Catholic community in the province has actively implemented social and charitable programs and projects for hunger eradication, poverty reduction, helping the lonely elders, orphans and homeless, creating civilized styles in wedding and funeral rites, preventing social evils, keeping for green, clean, beautiful environment surrounding, and using environmentally friendly products and energy-saving appliances.

During the nine months of 2024, Catholics in the province have built 209 charity houses, worth over 10 billion VND; drilled 98 clean wells worth 686 million VND; built 39 rural bridges, valued at 4,485 million VND; and provided 200 water tanks, worth 212 million VND.

In addition, they have monthly donated rice to 400 elders, worth over 80 million VND; and presented 5,600 Tet gift sets, worth over 1.6 billion VND to the poor and people with disabilities, over 10,000 Mid-Autumn gift sets worth 306 million VND to the poor children, and scholarships valued at 960 million to 330 pupils and students in localities.

Relating to health care, they have organized medical charities for providing health checks and distribution of medicines to 4,300 local people with a total value at over 40 million VND; provided free porridge at Ca Mau city General Hospital, worth over 130 million VND; offered free meals (from Monday to Thursday) in Ca Mau parish; and provided assistance to children with disabilities, orphans at Nhan Ai Centre located in village 3, Tan Xuan ward of Ca Mau city, worth 550 million VND, etc.
