Provincial-level Buddhist congress held in Thai Nguyen, Ho Chi Minh City and Long An

The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS)’s chapter in Thai Nguyen province successfully convened on June 20 its 5th congress (2022-2027 tenure).

The event taking place at the provincial Cultural Center saw the presence of Most Venerable Thích Thanh Dũng, Deputy Patriarch of the Central VBS; Most Venerable Thích Thiện Nhơn, President of the VBS’s Central Executive Council; Most Venerable  Thích Thiện Pháp and Most Venerable Thích Thanh Nhiễu, Standing Vice Presidents of the VBS’s Central Executive Council; Most Venerable Thích Bảo Nghiêm, Most Venerable Thích Gia Quang, Most Venerable Thích Quảng Tùng and Most Venerable Thích Quảng Hà, Vice Presidents of the VBS’s Central Executive Council; Senior Venerable Thích Đức Thiện, Vice President cum General Secretary of the VBS’s Central Executive Council.

State guests at the congress included Secretary of the provincial Party’s Committee Nguyễn Thanh Hải, Standing Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Đặng Xuân Trường, and Deputy Director of the Buddhist Affairs Department under the Government Committee for Religious Affairs Đào Huy Cường.

As reported at the congress, during the 2017-2022 term, the VBS chapter in Thai Nguyen has spent over 50 billion VND on social charities including contributions to the Covid-19 prevention work.

The one-day event elected the new 38-member executive committee for the 2022-2027 term with Senior Venerable Thích Nguyên Thành re-selected as Head of the VBS executive committee in the province.

During the event, Senior Venerable Thích Nguyên Thành and the VBS executive committee in the province in the 4th term were presented with the Third-class Labor Medal; Venerable Thích Chúc Tiếp and Venerable Thích Đạo Quảng were presented with certificates of recommendation by the Prime Minister.

Earlier, on June 18, the VBS chapter in Ho Chi Minh City held its 10th congress at Viet Nam Quoc Tu pagoda located in District 10.

The event saw the presence of Most Venerable Thích Trí Quảng, Acting Patriarch of the VBS cum Chairman of the municipal VBS’s Executive Committee in the 9th term; Most Venerable Thích Thiện Nhơn, President of the VBS’s Central Executive Council; Former Permanent Prime Minister Trương Hòa Bình, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Vũ Chiến Thắng, Vice President cum General Secretary of the Central Fatherland Front Committee Lê Tiến Châu, Chairman of the Government Committee for Religious Affairs Vũ Hoài Bắc, Vice Chairman of the Central Commission for Mass Mobilization Đỗ Văn Phớn, Chairwoman of the municipal People’s Coucil Nguyễn Thị Lệ, Chairman of the municipal Religious Committee Nguyễn Duy Tân, representatives from VBS chapters in several Southern provinces and cities, and about 700 outstanding monks, nuns and lay Buddhists in the city.

The one-day congress reviewed Buddhist affairs of the VBS chapter in the 2017-2022 tenure and mapped out key plans for the 2022-2027 term, as well as elected Most Venerable Thích Lệ Trang, Vice Chairman of the VBS’s executive committee in the city in the 2017-2022 tenure as Head of the executive committee for the 2022-2027 term.

During the event, Most Venerable Thích Trí Quảng was presented with the First-class Independence Medal.

In addition, 10 outstanding Buddhists in the city were awarded with certificates of recommendation by the Prime Minister; 17 Buddhist groups and 19 individuals were presented with certificates of merit by the Central VBS; and 36 Buddhist individuals were honored with certificates of recommendation by the municipal People’s Committee for their outstanding contributions to the Buddhist affairs and the socio-economic development in the city.

On the occasion, the new VBS executive committee in the province presented five billion VND to fund "For the Poor in the City" and five billion VND to Fund "For the national Sea, Island and the frontline" launched by the municipal Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee.

On June 17, the VBS chapter in Long An province held its 10th congress at Thien Chau pagoda located in Tan An City.

The event saw the presence of Most Venerable Thích Thiện Nhơn, President of the VBS’s Central Executive Council; Most Venerable Thích Minh Thiện, Chairman of the VBS’s Executive Committee in the province in 9th term; Former Permanent Prime Minister Trương Hòa Bình, and Chairman of the municipal People’s Coucil Nguyễn Thanh Hải.

As reported at the congress, Long An province currently has 316 Buddhist worshipping places with 1,582 monks and nuns. During the 2017-2022 tenure, the VBS chapter in the province has spent over 380 billion VND on social charities launched in many localities in the country.

The one-day event elected the new 68-member executive committee of the VBS chapter for the 10th term in Long An with Most Venerable Thích Minh Thiện re-elected as Head of the provincial VBS executive committee.

At the event, 15 groups and 24 individuals of the VBS chapter in the province were also presented with certificates of merit by the Central VBS for their practical contributions to Buddhist affairs, and 5 Buddhist groups and 10 individuals were honored with certificates of recommendation by the provincial People’s Committee.
