Provincial-level Buddhist congress held in Kien Giang and Hai Duong

The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS)’s chapter in Kien Giang province successfully held on May 24 its 10th congress (2022-2027) with the participation of over 300 Buddhist delegates and guests.

The event taking place at Phat Quang pagoda located in Rach Gia City’s Vinh Quang ward saw the presence of Most Venerable Thích Huyền Thông, Member of the VBS’s Central Discernment Council cum Head of the provincial VBS chapter; Most Venerable Thích Thiện Nhơn, President of the VBS’s Central Executive Council; Most Venerable Đào Như, Vice President of the VBS’s Central Executive Council; Most Venerable Danh Đổng, Chairman of the provincial VBS’s Executive Committee; Vice Chairman of the Central Fatherland Front Committee Ngô Sách Thực, and Chairman of the provincial People’s Council Mai Văn Huỳnh.

Buddhist dignitaries and guests at the event

Kien Giang province currently has 216 Buddhist worshipping places including 76 Khmer Theravada pagodas, seven pagodas recognized as national historical relic sites, and three other pagodas recognized as provincial-level historical relic sites.

As reported at the one-day congress, during the 2017-2022 tenure, the VBS chapter in the province has spent over 370 billion VND on the Covid-19 prevention and social charities in the locality.

The one-day event elected the new 68-member executive committee of the VBS chapter in Kien Giang with Most Venerable Danh Đổng re-elected as Head of the provincial VBS executive committee for the 10th term.

During the event, the VBS executive committee in the province was presented with the Third-class Labor Medal for their practical contribution to the national solidarity.

Provincial VBS executive committee receives Third-class Labor

At the event, 15 groups and 25 individuals of the VBS chapter in the province were also presented with certificates of merit by the Central VBS for their practical contributions to Buddhist affairs, and 15 Buddhist groups and 20 individuals were honored with certificates of recommendation by the provincial People’s Committee.

On the same day, the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS)’s chapter in Hai Duong province successfully held its 9th congress at Xu Dong Cultural Center located in Hai Duong City.

The event saw the presence of Most Venerable Thích Thanh Nhiễu, Standing Vice President of the VBS’s Central Executive Council; Most Venerable Thích Quảng Tùng, Vice President of the VBS’s Central Executive Council; Most Venerable Thích Thanh Điện, Deputy General Secretary of the VBS’s Central Executive Council cum Chief of the VBS’s Central Office in Hanoi; Senior Venerable Thích Thanh Vân, Chairman of the provincial VBS Executive Committee in Hai Duong province; Secretary of the provincial Party’s Committee cum Chairman of the provincial People’s Council Phạm Xuân Thăng, Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Triệu Thế Hùng, and Director of the Buddhist Affairs Department under the Government Committee for Religious Affairs Lê Minh Khánh.

As reported, the province currently has 1163 pagodas with 502 monks and nuns. During the last five years, the VBS chapter has spent over 39 billion VND on social charities and the Covid-19 prevention work in the locality.

The one-day event re-selected Senior Venerable Thích Thanh Vân as Head of the  provincial VBS executive committee for the 2022-2027 term.

During the event, the VBS executive committee in the province was presented with the Third-class Labor Medal of the President.

On the occasion, the new VBS executive committee in the province presented four charity houses valued at 200 million VND to the provincial Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee.
