Ninth Congress of Catholics for national construction & defense in Ho Chi Minh city convened
The Committee for Solidarity of Catholics in Ho Chi Minh city successfully held the 9th congress of the Catholics for national construction and defense for 2023-2028 tenure on September 6-7.
The event saw the presence of representatives from Ho Chi Minh city municipal authorities, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Vietnam, the Ho Chi Minh city Archdiocese, Catholic parishes in the city and 560 Catholic delegates from the Catholic community in Ho Chi Minh city.
The congress selected 99 members to the Catholic Solidarity Committee in Ho Chi Minh city for the 2023 – 2028 tenure with Priest Dominic Đinh Ngọc Lễ elected as Head of the Committee.
As reported at the event, Catholic followers in the city have actively participated in patriotic movements launched by the municipal authorities in the last five years. They also have spent over 264 billion VND on social and charitable projects, presented scholarships worth 113 billion VND and donated equipment valued at over 77 billion to health sector, etc.
On the occasion, the Central Committee for Solidarity of Vietnamese Catholics presented certificates of commendation to 20 Catholic individuals, the municipal authorities presented certificates of merit to three Catholic groups and 33 individuals for their outstanding contributions during the 2017-2022 tenure.
Ho Chi Minh city Archdiocese currently has 236 parishes and sub-parishes with 14 deaneries and 236 churches.
