Cau Ngu festival in Thinh Loc commune of Ha Tinh province’s Loc Ha district

Cau Ngu (Whale Worshipping) festival at Sat Hai Dai Vuong temple located in Thinh Loc commune of Ha Tinh province’s Loc Ha district is annually held from the 14th to 15th of the second lunar month.

Performing rituals at the festival

The traditional festival aims to pray for good weather and successful sea journeys, peace and a prosperous life of coastal people in the commune.

It’s also occasion to express as well as expresses gratitude to merits of Hoàng Tá Thốn general who made many glorious victories in the resistance war against the invading Mongols under King Trần Nhân Tông, then given the title of Sat Hai Dai Vuong who was assigned by the king to command the marines for protecting 12 estuaries and the coastal area.

Due to the Covid-19 epidemic, this year festival was held only with ritual ceremonies, without festive activities. The ritual ceremonies included a whale worshipping procession from the estuary to the Sat Hai Dai Vuong temple, an incense offering and a prayer for peace.
