Buddhist sangha in Ben Tre convenes 7th congress

The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS)’s chapter in Ben Tre province successfully held on May 6 its 7th congress (2022-2027 tenure).

The event taking place at the Office of provincial People’s Committee saw the presence of Most Venerable Thích Thiện Nhơn, President of the VBS’s Central Executive Council; Most Venerable Thích Nhựt Tấn, Chairman of the VBS’s Executive Committee in Ben Tre province; Chairman of the provincial People’s Council Hồ Thị Hoàng Yến; Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Nguyễn Thị Bé Mười; representatives of local authorities and VBS chapters in neighboring provinces and cities, and 248 outstanding monks, nuns and lay Buddhists in Ben Tre.

The one-day congress reviewed Buddhist affairs of the VBS chapter in Ben Tre in the 6th tenure, and mapped out working plans for the 7th term.

As reported, in the 2017-2022 tenure, the VBS chapter in the province has opened three Buddhist ordination conferences for about 1,000 Buddhist nominees, had 65 monks and nuns graduated from the provincial intermediate Buddhist school; and spent over 300 billion VND on social charities.

The event also elected a new 61-member executive committee of the VBS chapter in the province with Most Venerable Thích Nhựt Tấn re-elected as Head of the provincial VBS executive committee for the 7th term.

During the event, seven Buddhist groups and 33 individuals were presented with certificates of merit by the Central VBS; one Buddhist group and 9 individuals were also awarded with certificates of recommendation by the provincial People’s Committee.
