Preserving three traditional festivals, ceremonies of ethnic minorities in Si Ma Cai

Si Ma Cai district authorities in Ha Giang province approved on July 31 a project on the preservation and promotion of ethnic cultural heritages in association with tourism development for 2020-2025 period.  

Accordingly, the total investment of the project is over 42.7 billion VND.

The project aims to preserve three festival and traditional rituals, and two traditional crafts of ethnic groups in the district by 2025, as collect and preserve the intangible culture of three ethnic minority groups at high risk of extinction, as well as compile a scientific dossier to propose the recognition and embellish of a provincial-level historical and cultural relic site, preserve one traditional house of the Mong people, and maintain and expand the scale of five brocade weaving, silver carving, wine making and incense making of villages in communes of Can Cau, San Chai, Sin Cheng and Si Ma Cai town.

Specifically, preserving contents of traditional festivals and rituals in the project include the preservation and effective promotion of intangible cultural heritage values of Gau Tao festival of the Mong ethnic group in Sin Cheng commune’s Sang Sin Pao village, Xuong Dong (Downing field) festival of the Nung ethnic group in Nan San commune’s Doi 2 village, Cung Rung (Forest worshipping) festival in Lung Than commune’s Lung San village and Nan San commune by Nung ethnic people.

In addition, in the 2020-2025 period, the local authority will also implement a survey and develop a dossier to propose the recognition of the ancient citadel of Lung Than commune as a provincial-level historical and cultural relic site.

The project also aims to attract 270,000 visitors to Si Ma Cai by 2025, an increase of about 210 thousand arrivals compared to 2019. The total number of accommodation establishments will be 20, an increase of 15 establishments compared to 2020, the total number of rooms from 68 rooms in 2020 will be increased to 200 rooms in 2025. Tourism and service revenue in 2025 is expected to reach 67 billion VND.

Si Ma Cai is a border highland district of Lao Cai province and has 15 ethnic groups living together, and each ethnic group has a unique and long-standing traditional culture. Si Ma Cai district in Lao Cai province is also home to many traditional festivals of ethnic groups, many historical and cultural relic sites and traditional crafts of ethnic minorities.
