09/06/2019

The 2019 National Chau Van (Spiritual Singing) Festival officially opened at Lanh Giang temple in Moc Nam commune, Duy Tien district, in the northern province of Ha Nam, on September 5.

The festival attracted numerous artisans and singers from Chau Van clubs and folk-art associations in various provinces and cities nationwide where Chau Van is popular, including Ha Nam, Bac Ninh, Lang Son, Thanh Hoa, Vinh Phuc, Yen Bai, Hai Phong and Hanoi.

Chau Van is one of the typical traditional art forms of Vietnam, which is associated with the cultural and religious life of Vietnamese people.

It is related to the hau dong (mediumship) rituals performed in the "Practices Related to Viet Beliefs in the Mother Goddesses in Three Realms" that was added to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The festival aimed to honor outstanding individuals and groups for their efforts in preserving, practicing and promoting the artistic values of Chau Van singing as well as contributing to raising public awareness of preserving and inheriting the beautiful values of the traditional art form during the period of integration and development.

The event also offered an opportunity for artisans and singers to meet and exchange experience in teaching Chau Van singing to younger generations.

The 2019 National Chau Van Singing Festival will run until September 8.
