Ky Yen festival in An Giang receives recognition as national intangible cultural heritage

Thoai Son district authorities in An Giang province held on April 21 a ceremony to receive the certificate honoring the Ky Yen festival of Thoai Ngoc Hau temple as the national intangible cultural heritage and open the 20th traditional culture festival in the district.   

Present at the event included Deputy Secretary of the provincial Party’s Committee Lê Văn Nưng and officials from provinces and cities of Da Nang, Vinh Long, Can Tho and Kien Giang.

During the ceremony, Thoai Son district authorities received the decision from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism classifying Ky Yen festival of Thoai Ngoc Hau temple as national intangible cultural heritage.

Ky Yen festival is dedicated to Thoai Ngọc Hầu (1761 – 1829), a renowned general of the Nguyen Dynasty. He has rendered great contributions in expanding cultivation lands, digging canals in Hau Giang region, defending the southwest border and introducing Tuong singing (classical drama) to other localities in the country.

As reported, the annual Ky Yen festival features traditional values of Southern region and often attracts flocks of locals and visitors. With unique values, the festival of Thoai Ngoc Hau temple has been classified as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2020 by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.

The 20th traditional culture festival of Thoai Son district took place on April 21-23 with exhibitions, art performances, cultural activities, and tourist promotion activities.
