Hai Phong to suspend buffalo fighting festival 2021

Authorities in Hai Phong city’s Do Son district has issued a notification on suspension of the buffalo fighting festival 2021.

The buffalo fighting festival 2021 has been expected to take place in September 15. Due to the complicated context of Covid-19 pandemic, district authorities have suspended the festival for preventing the pandemic’s spread.

As reported, this is the second year that the festival was cancelled by the pandemic.

Buffalo fighting is the traditional festival expressing bravery, chivalry, and spiritual life of people in the past. The festival features worshipping rituals, buffalo fights and a procession of the strongest buffalo to offer to Diem Tuoc God -  The water god of people in Do Son district.

The festival was recognized as the national intangible cultural heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2013.
