The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) chapter in Kon Tum province successfully held its sixth congress (2022-2027 tenure) on July 21.

The event saw the participation of Most Venerable Thích Thiện Nhơn, President of the VBS’s Executive Council; Most Venerable Thích Thiện Pháp and Most Venerable Thích Thanh Nhiễu, Vice Presidents of the VBS’s Executive Council; and Most Venerable Thích Quảng Xả, Vice President of the VBS’s Executive Council cum Chairman of the VBS’s Executive Committee in Kon Tum.
Distinguished guests at the event included Deputy Secretary of the provincial Party’s Committee Nguyễn Văn Hòa, Vice Chairwoman of the provincial People’s Council Nghe Minh Hồng, Director of the Buddhist Affairs Department under the Government Committee for Religious Affairs Lê Minh Khánh and representatives from local authorities.
The congress elected the 43-member executive committee of the VBS chapter in Kon Tum for the 2022-2027 term with Most Venerable Thích Quảng Xả re-elected as Chairman of the VBS executive committee in the province.
New provincial VBS’s executive committee for 2022-2027 makes its debut at the event
As reported, Buddhism came to Kon Tum province in 1930s and the VBS’s Executive Committee in the province was established in 1995. Kon Tum currently has 43 monks and nuns, over 27,000 lay Buddhist followers and 33 Buddhist worshipping places.
During the 2017 - 2022 tenure, monks, nuns and lay Buddhists in Kon Tum province have spent about 31 billion VND on social charities supporting disadvantaged people and the Covid-19 prevention work.
At the event, the Central VBS presented certificates of merit to 5 groups and 17 individuals of the provincial VBS for their contributions to Buddhist affairs for the 2017-2022 tenure. Kon Tum provincial People’s Committee also awarded certificates of commendation to four local Buddhist groups and nine individuals for their social contributions during the 2017-2022 tenure.
