New Bishop of Thai Binh diocese appointed

Pope Francis accepted on October 29 the resignation from the pastoral care of Bishop Peter Nguyễn Văn Đệ of Thai Binh diocese and appointed Priest Dominic Đặng Văn Cầu, Principal of the Sacred Heart Major Seminary as new Bishop of Thai Binh diocese.

Bishop Dominic Đặng Văn Cầu was born on 17 July 1962 in Thai Binh province’s Dong Hung district under Thai Binh diocese. He entered My Duc Minor Seminary in 1971 and worked at Thai Binh diocese’s office from 1982-1989. He studied philosophy and theology at St. Joseph Major Seminary in Hanoi from 1989 to 1995 and was ordained a priest in Thai Binh diocese on March 9, 1996.

He has held the following positions: Secretary of Thai Binh diocese’s office (1996-2000); Secretary of Thai Binh diocese’s office (2006-2009) after receiving a master's degree with specialization in Catechetical Pastoral Care from the Institute Catholique de Paris (2000-2005); Head of Van Lang parish (2009-2014); Head of Cao Xá parish in Hung Yen province’s Phu Cu district (2014-2017); and Principal of the Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Thái Bình since 2017.
