The festival features a wide variety of ceremonies and rituals, of which the whale worshipping ceremony is the most important activity, attracting the participation of numerous fishermen.

The Nghinh Ong festival is a time-honoured traditional practice of locals, of both the central and southern regions.

It aims to worship whales - the sea god, who is believed to protect fishermen from dangers during their offshore fishing trips.

The festival marks the end of the lunar New Year holidays among fishing communities and fishermen would set sail on new fishing trips afterwards.

It also conveys people’s wishes for favourable weather conditions and bountiful catches.
