6th congress of Catholics for national construction & defense in Tien Giang convened

The 6th congress of Catholics for national construction and defense in Tien Giang province for 2022-2027 tenure was successfully held on November 7-8.

The event saw the presence of Priest John Phan Đình Sơn, Vice President of the Committee for Solidarity of Vietnamese Catholics; Priest Peter Nguyễn Phước Tường, Chairman of the provincial Committee for Solidarity of Vietnamese Catholics, and about 100 delegates representing Catholic followers in local parishes.

Local guest at the event included Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Nguyễn Văn Vĩnh, Chairman of the provincial Party Commission for Mass Mobilization Đỗ Tấn Hùng, Deputy Director of the Home Affairs Department Lê Hoàng Liêm and Vice Chairman of the provincial Vietnam Fatherland Front Huỳnh Văn Hải.

The congress selected 69 members to the Catholic Solidarity Committee in Tien Giang for the 2022 – 2027 tenure with Priest Francis Xavier Trương Quý Vinh selected as Head of the Committee.

As reported at the event, Tien Giang province has nine district-level Catholic solidarity boards with 169 members, 53 Catholic worshipping places, over 54,7000 followers, one bishop, and 141 priests.

Over the past five years, local Catholics have donated about 15,000 m2 of land for expanding rural roads and built 22 rural bridges.

The provincial Catholic Solidarity Committee presented scholarships, bicycles and notebooks to pupils and students with the total value of over 9,9 billion VND.

Catholic communities in the province have contributed over 29.4 billion VND to social charities such as providing health check and free medicines, presenting wheelchairs to the people with disabilities, reconstruction of charity houses, and rural roads, offering supports for the Covid-19 prevention work.

On the occasion, the provincial People’s Committee presented certificates of commendation to the provincial Catholic Solidarity Committee. The provincial Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee presented certificates of merit to seven Catholic groups and 16 individuals for their contributions in local movements during the 2017-2022 tenure.
