The Annual International Law and Religion Symposium 2014 held with the theme "Varieties of Secularism, Religion, and the Law"

The 21st annual International Law and Religion Symposium opened Sunday evening, 5 October 2014, at Brigham Young University Law School in Provo, Utah, with a keynote address by United States Senator for Utah Orrin Hatch. 

According to the scheduled program, during three days symposium, from 5-7 October 2014, about 80 invited delegates from 40 countries will address with the theme "Varieties of Secularism, Religion, and the Law" and such topics as "Secularism, Religion, and Social Tension", "Religious Responses to Secularism", "Varieties of Secularism", "The Future of Secularisms", and "Religious and Theoretical Understandings of Secularism", as well as Secularism, Religion, and Law from national and regional perspectives.

This year's delegates include scholars, government officials, journalists, and religious and civic leaders from Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Croatia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Dominican Republic, France, Greece, Guatemala, Guyana, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Mexico, Mongolia, Nigeria, Norway, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia, South Korea, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States, and Vietnam.

The Annual Symposium is organized and hosted by the International Center for Law and Religion Studies of the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University.  The Mission and Purpose of the Center are to help promote freedom of religion and belief by expanding, deepening, and disseminating knowledge and expertise regarding the interrelationship of law and religion, facilitating the growth of networks of scholars, experts, and policy makers involved in the field of religion and law, and contributing to law reform processes and broader implementation of principles of religious freedom worldwide.

In Vietnam, the International Center for Law and Religion Studies and the University of Social Science and Humanities under the Vietnam National University co-sponsored three annual Certificate Training Programs on Religion and the Rule of Law in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Vietnam is amongst countries frequently invited by the International Center for Law and Religion Studies to participate in this Annual Symposium in recent years, and delegates to this year’s International Law and Religion Symposium 2014 included an official from the Department of Legislation and Inspection under the Vietnam Government Committee for Religious Affairs.
