Human rights are both the target and the driving force of Vietnam’s development and renewal process, said Deputy Minister of Public Security To Lam at a meeting on Tuesday with David Saperstein, US Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom at the State Department. Human rights are stipulated in Vietnam’s Constitution and laws, Lam said.
Vietnam has joined almost all major international human rights treaties, concerning civil rights and rights related to politics, economics, and culture. Freedom of religion and belief is observed in Vietnam, as stated in the Constitution. The Vietnamese government has stepped up efforts to ensure these rights, which are equally important to social renewal and socio-economic development.
Deputy Minister Lam said he believes Saperstein’s visit will enhance mutual understanding especially in the areas of religion and human rights.
