Vietnam delegations attend 14th UN Vesak Day in Sri Lanka

A delegation of the Government Committee for Religious Affairs led by Executive Vice Chairman Bùi Thanh Hà and a delegation from the Vietnam Buddhist Sanga headed by Most Venerable Vice President Thích Thanh Nhiễu attended the 14th UN Vesak held in Colombo, Sri Lanka from May 12-14.

The UN Day of Vesak conference this year was held with the theme "Buddhist Teachings for Social Justice and Sustainable World Peace” and drew over 700 international participants from more than 70 countries and territories. 

At the opening ceremony, Vice Chairman Bùi Thanh Hà read the letter of congratulation sent by Prime Minister of Vietnam Nguyễn Xuân Phúc to the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka and the international Buddhist community.

 The Vesak Day commemorating the Birth, Enlightenment and the Parinirvana (death) of the Buddha on the full moon of May was recognized internationally though the adoption of a resolution by the United Nations in 1999.  

Ever since the adoption and ratification, annual celebrations of the UN Day of Vesak has been held annually, and Vietnam hosted this international Buddhist event in 2008 and 2014.  

While attending the event, the GCRA’s delegation had exchanges with the Minister of Justice and Buddhasasana of Sri Lanka, the Minister of Cult and Religion of Kampuchea and the representative leader of Laos Front for National Construction.
