State President awards medal to late Most Venerable Thích Thanh Bản

On March 5, Nghe An provincial Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) Executive Committee held a solemn ceremony to receive the National Unity Order from the President for late Most Venerable Thích Thanh Bản.

Attending the ceremony were Most Venerable Vice Chairman of the VBS Executive Council cum Chairman of Ha Tinh provincial VBS Executive Committee Thích Bảo Nghiêm, large numbers of monks and nuns and Buddhist followers inside and outside the locality.

During the ceremony held on occasion of 55th death anniversay of the late Most Venerable Thích Thanh Bản, local authorities handed over the National Unity Order prsented to the Buddhist leader the province VBS Executive Committee.

Most Venerable Thích Thanh Bản, whose real name is Trần Đức Bản, was born in Giao Phong village, Nghia Hong commune, Nghia Hung district, Nam Dinh province in 1891. When he was ten years old, he left to practice Buddhism in Cat Tru pagoda in Truc Ninh district.

During his lifetime, Most Venerable took many high positions such as member of the Nghe An provincial Executive Committee of  the Vietnam Independence League (Viet Minh), Chairman of the provincial Buddhist Association  for National Salvation and Abbot of Ngoc Lam pagoda (known as An Thai pagoda in Quynh Luu district, Nghe An province). He passed away on March 21, 1962.

Earlier, the provincial VBS Executive Committee held a grand ceremony  to pray for peace and prosperity in the country and installed Avalokitesvara statute in An Thai pagoda.
