Strengthened preservation of Ba Chua Xu (Regional Goddess) festival

The provincial government of An Giang has approved a project on the preservation and promotion of values of Sam Mountain Ba Chua Xu (Regional Goddess) Festival by 2030.  

The project aimed to synchronously undertake measures for the preservation and promotion of the heritage, contributing to the implementation of an overall strategy for economic, cultural and tourist development in the province

The project implementation will include collection of related data, practical surveys, and digitalized documentation of the festival; information and communication of the heritage values; strengthened management of Sam Mountain historical and cultural relic and personnel’s professional training; as well as completion of a dossier to be submitted to the UNESCO for considering the recognition the Sam Mountain Regional Goddess Festival as a intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

The festival is held annually from the 23rd to the 27th day of the fourth lunar month at Ba Chua Xu temple in Nui Sam ward, Chau Doc town, in An Giang. Every year, the Ba Chua Xu Festival attracts about four million visitors, who come to enjoy folk activities and to pray for prosperity. The festival was recognized as part of the national intangible cultural heritage in 2001.

According to legend, the regional goddess was sent by Almighty God to help local people and the region. She is also considered as one of six immortal goddesses in the country.
