Vietnam Ethnic Group Cultural Day – Great festival of ethnic minorities

Over the past 13 years, many practical activities have been held annually across the country, from mountainous areas to plains and from borders to seas and island regions, to mark the Vietnam Ethnic Group Cultural Day.
The Vietnam Ethnic Group Cultural Day has truly become a major festival bringing together ethnic groups closer while helping them promoting their traditional festivals and distinct cultural features, contributing to honor fine cultural values of ethnic communities and enrich people’s spiritual life.

Over the years, the Party and State have developed various policies on culture, including the conservation and development of traditional cultural identities. On November 17, 2008, the Prime Minister issued a decision recognizing the 19th of April as the Vietnam Ethnic Group Cultural Day.

Implementing the Prime Minister’s Decision, the Vietnam Ethnic Group Cultural Day has gradually been celebrated by 54 ethnic communities, becoming a festival for ethnic minorities to meet, exchange their traditional customs and cultures, contributing to honor fine cultural values of ethnic communities, enrich people’s spiritual life. Localities in the country have also responded to this day by practical activities.

In Ha Giang province, in order to preserve and promote cultural identities of ethnic minorities in the province, the ethnic culture, sports and tourism festival is an regular event held every two years at the district level and five year at the provincial level. During the festival, representatives from ethnic groups perform folk performances, helping visitors to understand tradition festivals of ethnic minorities. This is a positive way to preserve and promote traditional festivals of ethnic groups, enhance economic - cultural exchanges between regions in the province, and introduce unique cultural features of each ethnic group.

In Bac Kan province, local authorities have organized practical activities to preserve the traditional culture of local ethnic communities. In addition, the culture, Sport and tourism department have also launched specific projects on preserving and promoting the intangible cultural heritage such as Long tong festival in Ngan Son district’s Bang Van commune, Phat Lang festival of Red Dao people in Na Vai village of Ba Be district’s Quang Khe commune, three-day old ceremony of San Chi Dao people in Bac Nam district’s Boc Bo commune, etc.

In 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam, each ethnic group has its own unique characteristics and enriched identities, reflected in costumes, voices, writing, folk songs, folk dances, music, architecture, festivals, customs, beliefs. Therefore, everyone has a responsibility to preserve and promote of national cultural values, contributing to build a prosperous and civilized country, as well as promote fine values of the country's culture while absorbing the quintessence of the human being's culture in the integration period.
