VBS chapter in Quang Ninh convenes 5th congress

The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) chapter in Quang Ninh province successfully held its 5th congress on January 20.

The event taking place at Quang Ninh provincial Conference Center saw the presence of Most Venerable Standing Deputy President of the VBS’s Executive Council Thích Thanh Nhiễu, representatives from VBS executive committees in Northern  provinces and cities, and 250 representative monks, nuns and lay Buddhists in Quang Ninh province.

Guests at the congress included Vice Chairwoman of the Government Committee for Religious Affairs Trần Thị Minh Nga, Deputy Secretary of the provincial Party’s Committee Ngô Hoàng Ngân, and Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Cao Tường Huy.

As reported at the event, during the 2017 - 2022 tenure, the VBS chapter in Quang Ninh has built 100 charity houses, each worth from 50 to 100 million VND each, sent relief supplies worth over ten billion VND to flood-hit victims, donated over 20 billion VND to the Covid-19 vaccine fund, a 650-miilion VND ventilator and a 750-million VND negative pressure room to the Covid-19 prevention work, and contributed over 80 billion VND to funds for supporting the disadvantaged launched by local authorities.

During the event, Most Venerable Thích Thanh Quyết, Chairman of the VBS executive committee in Quang Ninh province presented 500 million VND to the charity-house fund of the provincial Fatherland Front Committee, and handed over national flags to Buddhist pagodas and monasteries in the province.

The Buddhist congress nominated a 55-member executive committee of the VBS chapter in Quang Ninh for the 2022 - 2027 term, with Most Venerable Thích Thanh Quyết re-elected as Chairman of the VBS executive committee in the new tenure.

Quang Ninh province is currently home to 159 Buddhist worshipping places and relic sites with 560 monks and nuns, and about 185,000 lay Buddhists, accounting for 15% of the provincial population.
