Lady Phuong Chao festival in Quang Nam receives recognition as national intangible cultural heritage

Dai Loc district authorities in Quang Nam province held on April 6 a ceremony to receive the certificate honoring the Lady Phuong Chao festival as the national intangible cultural heritage. 

Attending the event included Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Council Nguyễn Công Thanh and Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Trần Văn Tân.

Lady Phuong Chao (Nguyễn Thị Của as her real name) was born on February 25, 1800 in Phuong Chao village (now Khuong My village), Dai Cuong commune in Quang Nam province’s Dai Loc district. She had rendered great contributions in providing the health-check and medicines for local people, so when she died, local people built a temple in honor of her contributions.

Every year, Quang Nam provincial authorities held two festivals to dedicated to Lady Phuong Chao. In Phuoc Am village, Thang Binh district’s Binh Trieu Commune, the Lady Cho Duoc festival is held annually on the 11th day of the first lunar month and the Lady Phuong Chao festival takes place annually on the 25th day of the second lunar month in Khuong My commune.

Main activities in the festival include the procession of Lady Phuong Chao, a boat racing, lantern releasing, dragon dance and other folk games, etc.

Lady Phuong Chao festival has been classified as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2020 by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.
