On August 2, Cambodia’s Senior Minister and Minister of Cults and Religion Him Chhem led a delegation to visit the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) at its headquarters in Hanoi.
Most Venerable Standing Vice Chairman of the VBS Executive Council Thích Thanh Nhiễu and Most Venerable of the VBS Executive Committee Thích Gia Quang welcomed the delegation.
Joining the visiting reception were Director of the International Cooperation under the Government Committee for Religious Affairs Nguyễn Đức Vinh and officials of the Buddhist Affairs Department.
At the reception, Most Venerable Thích Thanh Nhiễu briefly shared with the guests the development of the VBS during the past 35 years and informed that the VBS currently has over 40,000 monks and nuns with 15,000 pagodas and representative bodies in 63 provinces and cities throughout the country. There are four Buddhist Institutes in Hanoi, Hue, Ho Chi Minh city and Can Tho province, seven Buddhist colleges and 28 Buddhist schools across the country, he added.
Minister Him Chhem also shared with the hosts on the religious life in Cambodia and informed that Buddhism has been followed by over 90% of the Cambodian population and stipulated as the state religion in the country. As in Vietnam, the Buddhist Sangha in Cambodia also pays due attention to education and has established training schools at different levels, he said.
