International workshop on religion study cooperation in Vietnam held in Hanoi

An international conference on religion study cooperation in Vietnam between organizations in Vietnam and the U.S was held on June 28 at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

The event themed “Religion study cooperation studies in Vietnam: 12 years in retrospect (2006-2018)” was organized by the Vietnam National University’s University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Institute for Global Engagement (IGE) and the Brigham Young University from the U.S.

Attending the event were scholars from Vietnam and the U.S, representatives from the Vietnam – US Society, several dignitaries of religions and officials tasked with religious affairs from central and local authorities.

During the event, participating delegates discussed the birth, development and positive contributions of cooperation activities of religious studies in Vietnam between Vietnamese and US partners over the past years. Vice President of the Central Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee Ngô Sách Thực attended the event and delivered a speech on promoting religious roles in society through state legislation. Vice Chairman of the Government Committee for Religious Affairs Dr. Bùi Thanh Hà also sent a paper on the implementation of the Law on Belief and Religion.

In the framework of agreements with the Vietnam – US Society under the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations, the IGE and Vietnamese and US partners have organized many theoretical and practical activities for enhancing the understanding of religions and religious issues in Vietnam.

Since 2006, the IGE in collaboration with the Institute of Religious Studies under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences has sponsored the organization of three international seminars on religion and the rule of law, and several international conferences on Protestantism in Vietnam. IGE has also collaborated with the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in organizing six training courses on religion and the rule of law for officials tasked with religious affairs from central and local authorities.

On this occasion, the Vietnam National University’s University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the IGE and the Brigham Young University (US) also held a meeting on June 29 with several alumni of religion and the rule of law certificate training courses.
