VBS reviews six-month activities

The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS)’s Central Executive Council held on July 10 a conference for reviewing religious and social affairs in the first six months of 2022, mapping out key tasks in the last months of the year, and approving preparations for the 9th national Buddhist congress.

The conference taking place at Quang Duc monastery in Ho Chi Minh City was co-chaired by Most Venerable Thích Thiện Nhơn, President of the VBS central executive council, Most Venerable Thích Thiện Pháp and Most Venerable Thích Thanh Nhiễu, Standing Chairmen of the VBS executive council.

Guests at the event included Vice Chairwoman of the Government Committee for Religious Affairs Trần Thị Minh Nga.

The conference reviewed outstanding achievements of the VBS in the first six months of the year, including the successful organization of the provincial-level congress of VBS chapters in 38 provinces and cities in the country.

As reported at the event, the VBS currently has 54,973 monks and nuns with 18,491 Buddhist worshipping places. During the first six months, the VBS has spent about 600 billion VND on social charities.

The conference approved the organization plan of the VBS’s 9th national congress (2022-2027 term) scheduled on November 27-29 at the Vietnam - Soviet Friendship Cultural Palace in Hanoi, with 1,091 Buddhist delegates.

Speaking at the event, Vice Chairwoman of the government religious committee Trần Thị Minh Nga extended congratulations to achievements in the VBS’s affairs in the first six months of 2022 and highlighted contributions made by the VBS to the social charities in the first six months.

She also had exchanges on the VBS’s key affairs in the last six months of the year, including the organization of the provincial-level VBS congress in remaining provinces and cities, the finalization of the 9th VBS congress’s documents, the amendment of the VBS’s charter in accordance with the Law on Belief and Religion, activities to support Buddhist monks in Thailand to study Vietnamese in Vietnam and Vietnamese pagodas in Laos, etc.

The government religious committee official reaffirmed the GCRA’s role and responsibility in practically supporting the VBS to successfully organize its 9th national congress in November 2022.
