A project for research and survey on Khmer Theravada Buddhism in Vietnam was preliminary evaluated at a meeting held by the Government Committee for Religious Affairs (GCRA) on November 29.
The Khmer Theravada Buddhism has 1.2 billion followers with 456 pagodas in provinces and cities of the South West region and plays an important role in the material and spiritual life of Khmer ethnic people.
The project aims to produce a comprehensive research and survey on Khmer Theravada Buddhism in Vietnam, as well as make recommendations for guidelines and policies on Khmer Theravada Buddhism.
The project implementation was led by Deputy Director of the GCRA’s Buddhist Affairs Department Nguyễn Phúc Nguyên and appraised by a seven-member council headed by Dr. Vũ Chiến Thắng, Chairman of the GCRA.

The assessment council highly appreciated the project’s feasibility and stated that results of the project would help improve the efficiency of the state management, create favorable conditions for religious practices of Khmer Theravada Buddhism, as well as promote the socio-economic development of localities having large numbers of Khmer people residents.
The assessment council also approved for the project to proceed the final assessment.
