Joint Working Group holds a meeting to review its task performance in guiding and assisting the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha for the United Nations Day of Vesak 2014 in Vietnam

On May 12, 2014, at the headquarter of the Government Committee for Religious Affairs (GCRA), the Joint Working Group held a meeting to assess its task performance in guiding and assisting the VBS for the United Nations Day of Vesak 2014

The meeting was chaired by Mr. Phạm Dũng, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Chairman of the GCRA, Head of the Joint Working Group. Attending the meeting were Most Ven. Thích Thanh Nhiễu, Standing Vice President of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) Executive Council, Chairman of the UNDV 2014, members of the Joint Working Group from 11 concerned ministries, central agencies and related localities;

The UN Day of Vesak 2014 took place at Bai Dinh pagoda in Ninh Binh province, with the attendance of more than 3,500 official delegates, including over 1,000 international delegates from 95 countries and territories worldwide

At the meeting, members of the Joint Working Group discussed and gave comments to the summary report on guiding and assisting the VBS in the successfully hosting of the UN Day of Vesak 2014, pointed out good results as well as limitations in preparation and organization works for the UN Day of Vesak celebration.

On behalf of the VBS, Most Ven. Thích Thanh Nhiễu expressed thanks to agencies, department and localities for creating favorable conditions for the VBS to successfully host the UN Day of Vesak 2014.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Phạm Dũng highly appreciated the contributions made by state agencies and localities in coordination with the VBS for successful hosting the UN Day of Vesak, helping to affirm the role of Buddhism, including the VBS in the achievement of UN millennium development goals, and to attach individual responsibility to the global issues. The success of the UN Day of Vesak 2014 once again affirms that Vietnam is always interested in and appreciative of fine moral values of religion, and that freedom of belief and religion in Vietnam has been guaranteed in accordance with international standards and Vietnam’s cultural values
