Chairman of the Government Committee for Religious Affairs Vũ Chiến Thắng paid homage on July 7 to Most Venerable Thích Đức Phương, Deputy Patriarch of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS)’s Patronage Council, who passed away on July 1 at the age of 85.
The Buddhist leader was born in 1933 and has served many high posts in the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha and been elected as the chairman of the VBS chapter’s executive committee in Thua Thien Hue province and the vice president of the VBS’s central executive council.
With his great contributions to the Buddhism and the nation, Most Venerable Thích Đức Phương was honoured with noble awards by the Party, State and VBS, including the Independence Order, third class, and the Great National Unity
His funeral was held at Lam Son pagoda located in Hue city of Thua Thien-Hue province from July 3 to the end of July 7.

Writing in the mourning book, Head of the government religious committee Vũ Chiến Thắng has highlighted great contributions of late Most Venerable Thích Đức Phương to Buddhist unity and development in the country, as well as to the course of national construction and defense. He also expressed condolences to the Buddhist Sangha and the Buddhist dignitary’s relatives.
The GCRA chairman also laid a wreath sent by President of State Trần Đại Quang for expressing his homage to the late Buddhist leader.
