The Government Committee for Religious Affairs (GCRA) had an exchange meeting on January 08 with the Standing Board of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS)’s Executive Council on Buddhist affairs 2018 and major events 2019.

The conference saw the presence of Chairman of the GCRA Vũ Chiến Thắng, Vice Chairmen of the GCRA Bùi Thanh Hà and Trần Tấn Hùng. Representatives from the VBS included Most Venerable Thích Thiện Nhơn, President of the VBS Executive Council, Vice Presidents of the VBS Executive Council Most Venerable Thích Thiện Pháp and Most Venerable Thích Thanh Nhiễu.

As reported at the meeting, Buddhists nation-wide contributed over 23,000 billion VND to social charities in 2018, proactively responding to the government policy for hunger eradication and poverty reduction.

In 2018 the Vietnam government approved for the VBS to host the UN Day of Vesak 2019 in Ha Nam province.

During the event, leaders of the GCRA highlighted the need for successful hosting the UN Day of Vesak 2019 as well as the implementation of the Law on Belief and Religion 2016.

The event is part of a coordination program between the GCRA and the VBS. According to the program, two sides would meet twice a year for exchanges on Buddhist affairs and social contributions of the Vietnam Buddhist sangha.
