Speaking at the event, Dr. Nguyễn Kim Sơn, President of the VNU, Hanoi and Head of the Trần Nhân Tông Institute, said that the project has historical significance and meaning, with important values, contributing to the implementation of major goals and orientations for the construction and development of Vietnamese culture and people, meeting the requirements of national sustainable development and international integration in the era of the new industrial revolution.

In such stature, the task of translating and promoting the quintessence of Oriental Classics, VNU has assigned Trần Nhân Tông Institute, a highly academic research facility and a member unit under the university to implement the project.

The project will be implemented over 10 years and is divided into two phases from March 2019 to February 2024 and from March 2024 to February 2029. The project's expected product is a series of printed and digital books on the quintessence of Oriental Classics, including 150 Buddhist books, nine Confucian books, two Taoist books, and previous works by Vietnamese Zen masters.

Speaking at the seminar, Deputy PM Vũ Đức Đam welcomed the cooperation and participation of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, research organizations, scientists and businesses in joining to deploy the project.

The deputy PM affirmed that the Party and State always determine that science and education are top national policies and an important driving force for socio-economic development and national defense. Therefore, all national resources should be given to science and technology development.

Vietnam has developed a lot of science and technology programs and projects with a number on a national scale. In the past five years, the nation launched five projects of great significance, including the National History Book, the National Geographic Book, the Vietnamese Encyclopedia, the Digital Vietnamese Knowledge System and the translation and promoting values ​​of Oriental Classics. The participation in these projects demonstrates the wisdom and responsibility of every person for the nation’s history, as well as for the present and future of future generations, Đam affirmed.

As the leading center for training and scientific research in the country, the VNU has hosted two science and technology projects assigned by the government, while it also actively contributes to the remaining three projects. These projects are expected to contribute to realizing the goal of building a Vietnamese culture that meets the innovation requirements.

Đam also said that, in the aforementioned five projects, there are three projects funded by the State budget and the remaining two projects (Oriental Classics and Digital Vietnamese Knowledge System) do not use the State budget. The Government wishes that it would be a joint project of every Vietnamese person and people who love Vietnam at home and abroad, Đam said, urging everyone to join hands to complete the projects and turn them into a common heritage of the Vietnamese people.
