Vietnam Buddhist Institute in Hue establishes archives & research center

The Vietnam Buddhist Institute in Hue based in Hong Duc pagoda located in Xuan Thuy ward of Hue city held on September a ceremony to formally establish an archives and research center on occasion of its 25th founding anniversary.

The event saw the presence of Most Venerable Thích Giác Toàn, Vice President of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS)’s Central Executive Council cum Director of the Buddhist Institute; Most Venerable Thích Đức Thanh, Chairman of the provincial VBS’s Executive Committee; Most Venerable Thích Hải Ấn, Principal of the Vietnam Buddhist Institute in Hue, and large numbers of scholars and researchers.

Distinguished guests at the event included Deputy Secretary of the Party’s Committee in Thua Thien Hue province Phan Ngọc Thọ and Chairman of the provincial Committee for Religious Affairs Nguyễn Văn Lập.

The archives and research center would serve as a place to collect, preserve and promote values of Buddhist heritage, cultural and national documents, meeting needs of research and studies for monks, nuns and the community, and be managed by Most Venerable Thích Hải Ấn, Head of the center.

The centre includes a Buddhist woodblock archives room, a library, a meeting room and an office room.

The Buddhist woodblock archives room has initially gathered all woodblocks kept at Tu Dam Pagoda with 828 plates (1,319 engraved faces) from ancient temples and pagodas in Hue city.

The library consists of thousands of books on Buddhism, philosophy, literature, etc, published before 1975 and donated by Buddhist families.
