VBS’s Buddhist chapter in Lao Cai holds 2nd congress

The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) Chapter in Lao Cai province convened the 2nd congress on September 16.

Attending the congress were Most Venerable Standing Vice President of the VBS’s Executive Council Thích Thanh Nhiễu, representatives from the VBS’s executive committee in Northern provinces, and large numbers of Buddhist monks, nuns and followers in the locality.

Distinguished guests at the event included Chief of the Government Committee for Religious Affairs’ Office Dương Văn Khá and Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Nguyễn Hữu Thể.

The congress elected 19 Buddhist dignitaries to the VBS’s Executive Committee for the 2017-2022 tenure, with Most Venerable Thích Thanh Điện reelected as the committee Chairman.

As reported at the event, currently, Lao Cai province is home to over 13,000 Buddhist followers with 5 Buddhist worshipping temples, and during the first term of 2012-2017, Buddhist monks, nuns and followers in Lao Cai province contributed a total value of over VND 9 billion to social charities in the locality.
