The Vietnam Buddist Sangha (VBS)’ Chapter in Kien Giang province held a grand ceremony on October 8 to mark the VBS’s 35th anniversary (7th of November 1981 – 7th of November, 2016).
Attending the event included Most Venerable President of the VBS’s Central Executive Council Thích Thiện Nhơn, Most Venerable Vice President of the Council Thích Thiện Tâm, Most Venerable Vice President of the Council in charge of Khmer Theravada Buddhism Thạch Sok Xanl, representatives from the VBS’s Chapter in provinces and cities in the country, and large numbers of monks, nuns and over 1,000 Buddhist devotees in the province.
The ceremony also saw the presence of Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Mai Anh Nhịn, Vice Chairwoman of the provincial Fatherland Front Committee Lê Thị Vệ, Vice Chairman of the provincial Committee for Religious Affairs Nguyễn Hoàng Oanh.
At the event, Most Venerable Vice President Thích Thiện Tâm read the message of the VBS’s Patriarch on the 35th founding anniversary of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha to all Buddhist monks, nuns and believers in Vietnam and overseas. Venerable Vice Chairman of the VBS’s Executive Committee in Kien Giang province Thích Minh Nhẫn presented a report on achievements of the VBS’s Chapter in the province over the past 35 years.

According to a local Buddhist report, for the past years, Buddhist devotees in the province have contributed over VND 50 billion to social and charitable activities, including building of bridges and loving houses, providing supports to the poor, sending relief to victims of natural calamities, etc.

On the occasion, Kien Giang provincial People’s Committee presented certificates of merit to 9 members of the Buddhist Executive Committee in the province for their outstanding contributions to social, charitable contributions in the locality.
