VBS proposes eliminating votive paper burning, moneymaking practices during Vu Lan festival

The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) has sent an official note to its chapters nationwide requesting proper organization of the Buddhist Parents Day (Vu Lan festival) 2019 - B.E. 2563.
The note signed by Most Venerable Thích Thiện Nhơn, President of the VBS Executive Council called for eliminating the burning of paper votive offerings during the Buddhist Parents Day festival. Instead of burning of paper votive offerings, the VBS encouraged Buddhist followers to focus on charitable activities for helping the poor in order to cultivate and share merits with the deceased parents and ancestors, helping them in their new existence.
The VBS also note requested Buddhist worshipping places not to collect money in the form of spiritual services, as well as not to organize practices inconformity with authentic Buddhism and traditional rites.
The document noted that the organizing of the festival should not affect the traffic and the public life in the localities.
As for the timing, the Buddhist Parents Day festival 2019 – B.E. 2563 will be held from 1st to 15th of the seventh lunar month (or last in the seventh lunar month).
