The sub-board for nun affairs under the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS)’s Chapter in Tien Giang hosted on March 11 the annual ceremony in My Tho city for commemorating Elder Nun Mahapajapati Gotami and elder nuns of Vietnam Buddhism.
The event taking place at Vinh Trang pagoda saw the participation of Vice Presidents of the VBS Central Executive Council Most Venerable Thích Thiện Pháp, Most Venerable Thích Giác Toàn and Most Venerable Thích Bảo Nghiêm, Most Venerable Chairman of the Tien Giang provincial VBS’s Executive Committee Thích Huệ Minh, Superior Nun Head of the VBS’s Sub-committee for Nun Affairs Thích nữ Tịnh Nguyện, representatives of 57 out of 63 local sub-boards for nun affairs, and 1,500 Buddhist followers from localities.
Distinguished guests at the event included Director of Buddhist Affairs under the Government Committee for Religious Affairs Bùi Hữu Dược, Chairman of the provincial Committee’s Commission for Mass Mobilization Trần Long Thôn and Chairwomen of the provincial Committee for Religious Affairs Bùi Thị Mai.
Nuns attend the ceremony
The ceremony aims to pay tribute to Elder Nun Mahapajapati Gotami who was the first woman ordained in Buddhism, and nuns of Vietnamese Buddhism who have rendered meritorious service to the country Buddhism.
During the ceremony, the participating Buddhist nuns reviewed the Buddhist history of Elder Nun Mahapajapati Gotami and the establishment of the Nun congregation of Buddhism.
Presenting charity house to the poor
During the event, the sub-board for nun affairs in Tien Giang province also presented 60 wheelchairs to people with disabilities as well as 20 charity houses and 500 gift sets to poor people.
Earlier, on March 9, the sub-committee for nun affairs under the central VBS organized an exhibition on Buddhist achievements by Buddhist nuns across the country and a seminar on March 10 on contributions to preaching of Buddhist dharma by Vietnamese nuns in general and those Tien Giang in particular.
As reported at the event, the annual ceremony next year (2020) will be held by the VBS chapter in Ho Chi Minh city.
