VBS Chapter in Tien Giang convenes 9th congress

The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) Chapter in Tien Giang province held the 9th congress for the 2017-2022 term on July 17-18.

Attending the congress included Most Venerable Standing Member of the VBS Discernment Council Thích Bửu Thông, Most Venerable President of the VBS Executive Council Thích Thiện Nhơn, Most Venerable Chairman of the provincial VBS Chapter’s Executive Committee Thích Huệ Minh and over 500 Buddhist monks, nuns and followers in the province.

Distinguished guests at the event included Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Trần Thanh Đức and representatives from the Government Committee for Religious Affairs.

The congress reviewed performances of the VBS Chapter during the 8th term and approved working plans for the 2017-2022 tenure. The event also elected 47 members to the VBS Chapter’s Executive Committee for the 2017-2022 tenure, with Most Venerable Thích Huệ Minh reelected as the committee Chairman.

As reported at the event, Buddhist dignitaries and followers in the province have contributed a total value of over VND 216 billion to social charities for the past five years.

On the occasion, the Central VBS Executive Council presented certificates of merit to 19 Buddhist groups and 32 individuals for outstanding contributions in Buddhist affairs. Local authorities also awarded certificates of merit to four Buddhist groups and individuals for their social charities over the past term.
