VBS Chapter in Ninh Binh convenes 6th congress

The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS)’s Chapter in Ninh Binh province solemnly held its 6th congress for the 2017-2022 tenure on July 28. 

The congress drew the participation of Most Venerable Executive Member of the VBS's Discernment Council Thích Thanh Đàm, Most Venerable President of the VBS’s Executive Council Thích Thiện Nhơn, Most Venerable Standing Vice President of the VBS’s Executive Council Thích Thanh Nhiễu, representatives from the VBS’s executive committee in Northern provinces, and large numbers of Buddhist monks, nuns and followers in the locality.

Distinguished guests at the event included Vice Chairman of the Government Committee for Religious Affairs (GCRA) Dương Ngọc Tấn, Secretary of the provincial Party Committee Nguyễn Thị Thanh, and Vice Chairman of Ninh Binh provincial People’s Committee Tống Quang Thìn.

The congress highlighted achievements the VBS’s Chapter in the past five years, approved working plans for the new tenure of 2017-2022, as well as selected 33 members to the new-term VBS’s Executive Committee in the province with Senior Venerable Thích Thọ Lạc as its Chairman.

According to the congress’ reports, the Buddhist Chapter successfully participated in the organization of the 11th UN Day of Vesak 2014 and the International Buddhist conference 2015. In addition, Buddhist monks, nuns and followers in the province have contributed over VND 20 billion to social charities for the past five years.

On the occasion, the provincial VBS Chapter received the Third-class Labor Medal from the State President and certificates of merit from the Prime Minister for honoring its outstanding contributions in Buddhist affairs and social charities.

Currently, Ninh Binh province is home to over 316,000 Buddhist followers with 351 pagodas.
